PEARL Project

In 2006 ABPmer commenced the role of Project Work Package Co-ordinator in the new Port Environmental Information Collector project, PEARL. PEARL is a 3 year European Commission project focusing on the collection and use of environmental monitoring data and ABPmer are specifically involved in Work Package 2 which requires the collection of information and opinions from European ports, and Work Package 5 which will trial the PEARL platform at 3 European ports.

The project team from ABPmer will be working alongside other members of the PEARL project team which includes Atos Origin (Spain), Starlab (Spain), Ecoports (The Netherlands), Boost (France), Ifremer (France), Polspace (Poland) and SRC (Polish Academy of Science, Space Research Center).

The primary objective of PEARL is to research the development of a ‘Port Environmental Data Management System Platform’ which can be easily accessed by ports. This system will allow for the optimal exploitation of remotely sensed and in situ (collected by sensors at the location) data products and models, so that all port environmental data can be accessible from one source.

The results from ABPmer’s initial work package will be passed onto the next stage of the project where it will be analysed and major data sources chosen for inclusion in a system. Once this information has been collected ports will be given the opportunity to offer data to trial the system. This data will form the basis of the final PEARL ‘platform’ which is intended to manage and disseminate port environmental data to all users
