Online Marine Aggregates Research Database

In 2007, ABPmer, in collaboration with the GeoData Institute, delivered an online research tool on behalf of DEFRA. The project was financed by the Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund (ALSF) Marine Environmental Protection Fund (MEPF) and created a database of research project information relating to marine aggregate extraction. The online system has been designed to maximise user benefit through improved ‘knowledge management’, and has been tailored to address scientific, as well as policy needs.

Users can access over 1000 records relating to marine aggregate research through a specially designed website: www.MarineALSF.org.uk. The website holds a ‘live’ register of research studies contained within a spatial database and, where available, supplies direct access to PDF research reports. The documented research is primarily marine-aggregates based, but also includes data from other relevant sectors of interest.

The Project Manager from ABPmer, Jamie Moore said:

“This project has documented a wide range of marine aggregate project information and created a valuable reference system. The database will provide an important tool for scientists to search for marine-aggregate project information and will assist project funders when allocating themes and topics for future research priority.”

The project database is also in line to be extended in 2008 to provide access to relevant marine ALSF funded datasets including digital bathymetry and ecological surveys.
