Marine Survey

Overview

ABP Marine Environmental Research Ltd (ABPmer) operates a survey team which completes hydrographic and field investigations throughout the UK and internationally. Our equipment pool carries an extensive range of instrumentation for bathymetric surveying, 2D and 3D flow monitoring, water levels, float tracking, multi-parameter water recording, grab sampling and coastal-zone mapping. This is backed up by a fully equipped sediment analysis laboratory and computer facilities for data analysis, data presentation and map and chart production.

Services

  • Survey design, planning, management and reporting.
  • On-site representation for QA purposes.
  • Readily deployed nearshore and river survey vessel and access to a third party 3-man hovercraft.
  • Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS for topographic and bathymetric survey work. This allows for measurement accurate to centimetres in the horizontal and vertical planes.
  • Single and Multi-beam bathymetric surveying.
  • Water Quality monitoring (suspended solids, salinity, temperature, etc).
  • Sediment density measurement by nuclear transmission gauge.
  • Sediment sampling and surface coring for physical and chemical analysis.
  • In-house sediment analysis for Particle Size Analysis (PSA) and suspended solid content, including presentation
  • Benthic sampling for species monitoring.
  • Current profiling using acoustic doppler profiling technology. Static deployments from bed frames
  • Wave measurement.
  • Vessel dynamics measurement for under-keel clearance and mooring
  • Wide range of data analysis and presentation services including bespoke programming solutions and automatic report generation.

ABPmer's field survey team is able to provide:

Fast and accurate bathymetric surveys using portable, fully automatic depth-and-position recording equipment. Both single and multi-beam surveys can be completed from very shallow waters to deeper inshore waters. 'Hypack' software is used for data collection and post processing.

Long-term field measurement programmes of suspended sediment, salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen etc and wave and water level measurements. Coastal zone mapping/topography and bathymetry where continuity and/or repeatability are prime considerations.

Collection of current data (using single point and acoustic doppler current technologies).

Bed grabbing for sample analysis of chemical content (including contaminants), particle size analysis and benthic species analysis as required.

Very accurate (sub-centimetre) benchmark determination by static GPS observations. Positions are determined using the Ordnance Survey National GPS Network.
