ABPmer to review offshore wind impacts on marine sediment

ABP Marine Environmental Research Ltd (ABPmer), a leading provider of specialist advice and technical expertise to the offshore wind sector, has been awarded a contract to review the impacts on marine sediment by offshore wind projects. The main aims of the COWRIE (Collaborative Offshore Wind Research Into the Environment) funded project are to review and update available sediment monitoring evidence from existing offshore wind farms and disseminate lessons learnt.

Working with CEFAS and HR Wallingford, ABPmer will lead the work to collate and review monitoring evidence from both UK and European projects. The work will include technical reviews of suspended sediments, scour and morphology helping to identify best practice for monitoring techniques, with a focus on future developments.

Bill Cooper said:
“It remains important to gain an overall picture of the effects of offshore wind farms in preparation for further development under Round 3.  This work will contribute to a fuller understanding of the impacts on the marine environment by extending our previous sediment monitoring review and will integrate with a Defra study already underway by CEFAS to review all offshore wind farm monitoring data associated with FEPA licence conditions. A report of the findings will be available to industry via the COWRIE website towards the end of the year.”

ABPmer is a recognised advisor to the offshore wind industry.  The organisation has led several strategic level technical reviews for Government and The Crown Estate and its coastal process and metocean analysis expertise has supported the majority of Round 1 and Round 2 offshore wind farm projects and a number of Round 3 preliminary assessments.
